Arbutus 04:09
Arbutus ©Gail Noonan 2011 I swing the axe and it bounces Coming right back at me A six pound maul, won’t make a dent at all In a round from an arbutus tree Twenty odd years in your shadow Tea at the start of the day I missed the meaning, how far you were leaning Over me while I read and played Crashing down when I was away. Ground shakes like earthquake, all fall down. X 2 Do-dit-do, dododo, Do-dit-do, dododo Do-dit-do dododo do X2 Can’t blame the wind in the stillness Weakness that no one could see. You fell and you shattered Hurt nothing that mattered Except you who mattered to me Reaching up to the heavens Stretching across my front yard I never thought, that hidden rot Could bring down a tree so large But it did and she came down hard. Ground shakes like earthquake, all fall down. X 2 Do-dit-do, dododo, Do-dit-do, dododo Do-dit-do dododo do X2 Can’t blame the wind in the stillness Weakness that no one could see. You fell and you shattered Hurt nothing that mattered Except you who mattered to me (Half verse instrumental) Death of an arbutus tree Ground shakes like earthquake, all fall down. X3

Don’t Say Goodbye –Gail Noonan What do you say To some one you’ve loved a lot Lived with until you thought, This can’t go on And then when you part, You see each other everyday Can’t seem to stay away. Joined at the heart Chorus: Don’t say goodbye to love that was so true You can’t deny all that you’ve been through Don’t say goodbye, Pushing beyond, You won’t want to stay alone Find love to match your own. Make a new home Who’ll make the move? New ways to search for love Reach out and rise above. Breaking new ground Chorus You let me know, So I wouldn’t be surprised When I saw you driving by, With your new love. No need to hide The happiness in your eye The one sitting by your side Will be my friend too. Final chorus: Don’t say goodbye To love that was so true You can’t deny All that you’ve been through Don’t say goodbye To love that was so true You can’t deny All that you’ve been through Don’t say goodbye, Don’t say goodbye.

Sourdough Starter ©Gail Noonan 2000 Fishing around but I can’t find a lover They hit the ground or they all run for cover. Looking for some one who’ll look back at me. Hardly a nibble, no fish in the sea. Plenty of nothing, I couldn’t try harder. So I go to bed with my sourdough starter Chorus: Ou-ee, my sourdough starter Not a lot more than flour and water, A teaspoon of milk and a wee pinch of cumin. Likes to be kept nice and warm like a human. Don’t overheat it, remember to feed it. Good for a rise whenever you knead it. Bridge: Thought it was gone for so long, been abandoned Roared back to life with a new understanding Temperature’s rising, about to boil over I’m under stress from my own volcano Singing this tune and playing my banjo All on my own, oh-solo me-oh Nice to have someone singing with me Weaving together a sweet harmony Pickings are slim and the grinnin' gets harder So I go to bed with my sourdough starter. Ou-ee, my sourdough starter Not a lot more than flour and water, a teaspoon of milk and a wee pinch of cumin. Likes to be kept nice and warm like a human. Don’t overheat it, remember to feed it. Good for a rise whenever you knead it. Good for a rise whenever you knead it. Good for a rise whenever you knead it.(rit.)

Rings 03:34
Rings ©Gail Noonan 2014 Today, I took the rings off and put them away It’s all right. I’ll be okay I’ll make it through today. You tried. Until that truth you couldn’t hide You went away inside. Bridge When people ask “How’s it going’” I hope the meltdowns aren’t showing. Kids are great. Keep me together We’ve made it through stormier weather You say We shouldn’t fight, it could drive me away. Instead you pace, trapped in a cage You made yourself to hold your rage. Too long Looked at the diamond and tried it back on My right hand but it felt wrong It’s put away where it belongs 2nd Bridge Now it’s been years since we’re together I’m feeling good, stronger than ever Battles won, I’ve begun To live again, it’s safe to have fun Today Circle the date I’m happy to say I’m on my own and that’s okay I’ve made it through today Today, today, today, today.

Push/Pull 03:58
Push/Pull © Gail Noonan 2009 You pull me, you push me away. I’m drawn by the words that you say. I’m slowly catching on, that I’ll be strung along. Till you find a new string to play. I’m trying, yes, I’m trying. I’m trying, yes, I’m trying You toy like a cat with its prey. A yo-yo that’s wound on a spool I’m destined to come back to you I try to escape but just spin in place With one little tug I’m your fool. I’m trying, yes, I’m trying. I’m trying, yes, I’m trying I’m hopelessly wrapped around you. I can’t erase the need for love. You set the pace just fast enough. You keep me in sight, before you take flight. But not close enough I can touch. I’m trying, yes, I’m trying. I’m trying, yes, I’m trying I’m dying, yes I’m dying I’m dying, yes I’m dying You toy like a cat with its prey

Quicksand 02:54
Quicksand - Gail Noonan © 2013 Quicksand I’m walking on quicksand You reach out with your hand And fall in with me. Hot damn, It wasn’t what we planned We hoped to reach dry land A safe place to be. Bridge If you hear us, help us please As we’re sinking past our knees If we struggle, twist and shout We’ll sink deeper, not get out Of quicksand, This might be our last stand Extinct or extract man What will it be? No chance A passionate slow dance Submerging in romance No one will see. 2nd bridge Will the bubbles mark our spot If we’re lucky or we’re not Shoes are lost and more to dread If we panic lose our heads In quicksand We’re sinking in quicksand Quick thinking’s our best chance To get ourselves free and keep our pants on! Our last chance, we’re done romancin’ To get ourselves, footloose and dancin’ - free

Cotton Socks 03:01
Cotton Socks by Gail Noonan © 1997-2002 He starts up in the morning, as the day is forming And goes until the sun sets for the night A moving blur, it does occur to me that he'll be needing extra special care to keep him right. Life wouldn't be complete. You're only happy as your feet. What keeps a foot from smiling in its shoe? Chorus: I buy cotton socks for my dear sweet lover. Only the purist of fibres will do. No tricot, no 5 percent nylon. Its cotton I've boughten for sweet lover you. A summer storm is frightening, with thunderbolts and lightning. In winter wind will toss the trees all night. If one should fall, destroy us all, as we lay sweetly dreaming. I guess that's just the price of sleeping tight. Sleeping with your feet, sticking out below the sheets. If you get cold feet what am I to do? Chorus When times are getting leaner and mean streets just get meaner. The straight and narrow's curving to the right. The bitter taste of poverty, you can't afford a coffee. One less choice to make when money's tight. Surviving on the cheap and thinking quickly on your feet. There's one expense I always will approve. Chorus

Chanterelle Rain by Gail Noonan ©2006 Near the end of the summer, after endless blue skies It's been so hot and sunny, all the wells have gone dry Good for tomatoes and ripening grain. But we long in mid-August for a chanterelle rain. A chanterelle rain for two days that's all Then back to the summer that's left before fall If we get our wish then we know very well The bliss that awaits when we find chanterelles Let it rain, chanterelle rain. Chanterelles The heat makes us cranky and prone to complain When suddenly caught in a chanterelle rain For some it’s a nuisance with books left outside Open car windows and clothes on the line. And then there are those who look up and smile, Knowing what treasures there'll be in a while. If we get our wish then we know very well The bliss that awaits when we find chanterelles Let it rain, chanterelle rain. Chanterelles A law-abiding citizen most of the time. I try to act normally, toeing the line. Until the season when I lose my mind. Then I'll lie and I'll trespass, won't tell where I find... Let it rain, chanterelle rain, chanterelle rain Chanterelles, chanterelles, chanterelles

Galiano Burning © Gail Noonan 2008-09 The woods have gotten tinder dry The wind’s come up, the tide is high Across the Pass smoke fills the sky Angry and foreboding. We sense the blaze before we hear The water bomber as it nears The ridge of trees it barely clears A giant slowly turning. Galiano’s burning We all come together, stand vigil all night. Such different people in crisis unite. Like fire, fire. Ocean water plummets down. Sea on land, it’s turned around. Drown the fire. Salt the ground. Galiano’s burning For three more days the bomber drones Circling around the fire zone. One hundred people leave their homes And hope they’ll be returning. Galiano’s burning Too long without rain on a hot summer’s night We all feel the strain that one spark could ignite Fire, fire. We look across at Sturdies Bay The fire’s out, there’s just a haze. Another lovely summer’s day, All looks reassuring. Though the wind is still so dry. Steal the teardrops from your eye When thinking of that smoke filled sky Anytime returning and Galiano burning.

One Floor Below © Gail Noonan 2009 First warning, rumble behind the gull’s cry. All morning, sunlight bled through a bruised sky. Pushing through air that is thicker than mercury. Keeping me low to the ground. Caught in between the extremes of polarity Danger could strike all around. Rage is a tide rising higher, climbing with no place to go. Somebody screams bloody murder, one floor below. One floor below. Next morning, could it have been a bad dream? Doubt forming, shriek of a cat or a scream. Hell’s breaking loose with its own electricity. Up from the ground aiming wild. No one’s immune from the worst that could ever be. Hearing a fist hit a child. Bridge: Why does the child bear the brunt of the storm? Rain frees the clouds, leaves the air gently warm. Rage is a tide rising higher, climbing with no place to go. Somebody screams bloody murder, one floor below, One floor below, one floor below.

Dreaming When © Gail Noonan 2020 Intro Amazing all the things we took for granted From hugging friends to standing close in line. Piling in the car to get to choir Our only worry getting there on time. Now the halls are empty, voices silent Smiles are covered for the common good We look above the masks of friends reliant On their gaze to tell us what hearts should Dreaming when Your arms surround me, and I’m folded in What astounds me is the good I see Displays of grace amid uncertainty Dreaming when We take the hand of someone, draw them in To understand and welcome. Until then, We keep our distance from our dearest friends. The smoke of distance blazes drifts towards us. On the breeze that used to bring us sun. Covered in a haze that seems to warn us. Danger comes from far away or getting close to anyone. Dreaming when We learn the lessons that the world intends To carry on without us if we try To keep ignoring what we can’t deny Dreaming when We earn her blessing and we make amends. To treat the world around us like a friend. Whose arms surround us and we’re folded in Whose arms surround and fold us in. Whose arms surround and fold us in.
